about

Surfin’ in the Fields came about after spending the day at my father’s small town for a celebration. Everyone was having so much fun and was evidently very proud of their fine community and their farming occupation.

The tune also provided the opportunity to touch on some western alienation in a lighthearted way.

lyrics

Surfin’ in the Fields

been livin’ here a hundred years some times it seems for more
used to make a good payday that’s what we all work for
then one day they took it away and cancelled the Crow Rate
turned around and kicked us down with something called Free Trade
I ain’t gonna go

you can dry me out and dust me out and leave me in the snow
but when summer comes I’ll get my run and show you what we know
there ain’t a better place to find the sunshine what a deal
ain’t worth that much in cash and such
surfin’ in the fields

started with sodie and an ox cart from the train
and no we weren’t the first ones here but we’re sure glad we came
but it seems like every time we get things on a roll
there’s BSE and subsidies that just won’t let us go
I can only tell you what I know

you can tariff me out and what if me out and try to take my land
but when summer comes I’ll get my fun and tell you ‘bout my plan
there ain’t better way to spend a day out it’s a steal
it’s worth the guff and stress and stuff
surfin’ in the fields

those out East sure like the feast we grow
but when it comes time to pay the dime we know
we’re on our own and that’s just fine
